Metamorphose was designed as a community arts center on an empty site in North Boulder. This project has a relationship with Kaleidoscope Glassworks, which was designed to be housed on the Metamorphose site while it's not traveling to and from Boulder community events. Metamorphose includes a central roof that connects site. This roof creates a unifying, campus-like feeling for the user, and helps to control sun, wind, and rain/snow conditions. The site is positioned in a particularly diverse part of Boulder, with the surrounding infrastructure ranging in uses from store fronts, to residential buildings, to workshops. The location of the homeless shelter in North Boulder was particularly influential in the design of this project, as it helped to inform the open East edge of the site.
The design process began with looking at the desire paths through the existing site. These paths were used as an informative study towards the form of the building. The access from the homeless shelter and visual openness from Lee Hill drive were of particular importance throughout the design process.
